PUBLIC COMMENTS REGARING EXXONMOBILS

 AIR PERMIT REQUEST

The following comments were obtained by Louisiana Democracy Project.  They include comments from individuals who oppose giving the permit, live or work within two miles of Exxon Mobil, or live within East Baton Rouge.

I work within 2 miles of ExxonMobil

It will create more problems for the people of Baton Rouge, especially the people who live close to Exxon.  In renewing this contract, Exxon will be able to release harmful gases and chemical emissions throughout the city.  Our families and friends will, once again, have to deal with the distasteful smell of sulfur in the air.  Carbon monoxide will fill the air, producing more health problems to the residents of this great city.  Is money really more important than the peoples well being? Exxon is a giant corporation aiming to hurt our people.  Lets not help them hurt us anymore.  Our residents are counting on it.

Southern University has already been put through enough air pollution.  Everyday students are complaining about their head hurting or they are having trouble catching their breath.  It can only be one thing and thats the plant.  I am in the Army R.O.T.C. and when we have physical training three times a week, breathing the air around this campus is very hard.  Exxon has to realize that there are more important things than making money.  So I would greatly appreciate if you would deny Exxon from giving us anymore problems.

There are enough pollutants in our air supply.  What does ExxonMobil think will destroy these extra toxins in the air? This will only help destroy our ozone layer.  It will be greatly destroyed faster and quicker with the release of the extra waste.  Lets first find ways to stop making all this waste instead of finding ways to hide the problem.  I would like to receive additional literature about this problem.

It would present many health hazards.  I suffer from asthma and it will cause me increased problems with breathing with additional pollutants in the already unhealthy Baton Rouge air.

We have enough problems with pollution right now.  By doing this, it will cause more health problems.  They will be doing more harm than good.  Of course, they help out the community but Im sure they can find another way, safer and healthier, to do their job.

Pollution destroys lives.  A lot of people contract diseases from pollution.  I dont want to suffer so that people who dont live near the pollution can make money, especially on my behalf.

They are messing up the air in our community and contaminating our air.  Thats not right we have enough pollution going and theyre killing our black community.  Southern is the closest university and if it was LSU they wouldnt have it.

An increase in our air pollution will lead to deterioration.  Our community already has too much pollution and to add 1890 to that is unnecessary.  I dont what to die and I want to live a healthy long life.  It cause mutation and a bad odor which will make people sick.

Because I have read that statistics say the women that graduate from Southern University 1st child is either a birth defect or a miscarriage probably caused by pollution.  And also I have a cousin that attended SU in the early 80s when the pollution was worse and has a skin disease that is not hereditary and we think it was caused by the emissions in the air.

It is hazardous to our health.  I dont want to be sick in the future and find that the cause of my illness is in fact ExxonMobil being permitted to send out hundreds of tons of emissions.

I want to be able to breathe clean air as well as my kids.  If anything instead of adding a % of pollution, they need to be taking away or decreasing the % of what is being polluted now.  You can not pass up Scenic Highway without getting sick in the stomach or smelling something funny.
